Með skólafélögum í Amsterdam

Reyndar byrjaði þessi ferð ekki vel því Icelandair hafði ekki gefið út miðann minn svo ég þurfti að hringja í snarhasti heim og reka á eftir þar sem ég stóð í afgreiðslunni á flugvellinum í Stavanger. Þetta er með dýrustu miðum sem ég hef keypt og miðað við gæðin á þjónustunni hjá KLM þá var þetta ekki þess virði, en ég vildi ekki missa af dagskránni sem Godfried og félagar höfðu sett upp. Ég missti aðeins af byrjuninni á föstudeginum en annars var laugardagurinn og sunnudagurinn settur upp á eftirfarandi hátt:

„Saturday August 30th- update. The weather is looking great so we have planned some events to enjoy the weather and surroundings.

10:00: Assemble at the Lloyd Hotel, Oostelijke Handelskade 34, 1019 BN Amsterdam and board the cars of Jack, Paul and Godfried, who will be the drivers of the day. Since no visit to Holland / the Netherlands is complete without seeing windmills and wooden shoes, we will start the day with a visit to the Zaanse Schans, Schansend 7, 1509 AW Zaandam, which is about 20 minutes from the Lloyd Hotel.

10:30-12:00: Guided tour by Jeroen Breeuwer of the Zaanse Schans.
There were once more than a thousand windmills situated alongside the Zaan river, six of which can now be found at the Zaanse Schans: two oil mills, a mustard mill, a paint mill and two saw mills. A visit to a working industrial mill is an unforgettable experience. A number of fascinating traditional Dutch crafts are practised at the Zaanse Schans. There are demonstrations of clog making, Delftware painting, pewter casting and cheese making in a variety of historic Zaanse warehouses and barns.

12:00-13:00: Lunch at the Zaanse Schans
13:00-14:00: Drive back to Amsterdam and walk to the Spui

14:00-15:30: Amsterdam city walk with historian Reno Raaijmakers.
The title of the walk is Amsterdam, its rise, greatness and fall. This walk is a general introduction to the history of the city and its major monuments. It will show you how a little Medieval town evolved into the centre of 17th century European economy and became the intriguing city it is today. We will start at the statue ‘t Lieverdje’ on the Spui and finish at the Westertoren.

15:30-16:00: Transfer to Gassan Diamonds, Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 173-175, 1011 LN Amsterdam. Diamond Tour Gassan Diamonds.
An exciting opportunity to see diamonds being crafted through all stages. Admire the work of talented craftsmen, as they turn rough diamonds into dazzling, exquisitely polished stones.

17:00-17:30: Drive or walk back to the hotel for those that want to refresh before the days finale, others will find a terrace between the Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat and the Stationsplein to enjoy the weather. For instance the terrace of the ‘Beurs van Berlage Café’, Damrak 277, 1012 ZJ Amsterdam

18:00-18:30: Drive or walk to the Central Station
18:30: Board the salon boat Johanna at the jetty on the Stationsplein (Steiger Stationsplein t.o. Holland International voor het C.S. Amsterdam).
18:30-20:30: Canal cruise with BBQ on the salon boat Johanna
Cruising on the canals is best on an open boat. The removable roof and side windows allow for enjoying the cruise in the open. The Johanna is the only salon boat in Amsterdam being equipped in this manner, allowing us to enjoy the historical scenery as well as diner and drinks, in the outdoors.

Sunday August 31st- update
Time to explore other sights in or around Amsterdam. Depending on weather, interest, preference and amount of participants this will be organised or on your own.
Early in the morning (around 8:30), Eggert and Godfried will do a short run in the ‘Amsterdamse Bos’ (the ‘Amsterdam Forest’) in preparation for the NYC Marathon on November 2nd. Anyone that wants to join is welcome, you do not have to be an advanced runner to enjoy, just bring your running gear.“

Til að gera langa sögu stutta, þá var dagskráin á laugardeginum afar fróðleg og skemmtileg um kvöldið þar sem við sigldum um borgina og nutum matar og drykkja um borð í bátnum. Við vorum þrír eftir á bar við aðalbrautastöðina þegar mér fannst mál að halda heim á Lloyd hótelið. Reyndar var það mikil skemmtun á föstudagskvöldið þegar ég hitti liðið fyrst að skoða herbergin sem við fengum. Hótelið þykir hipp og kúl og það er hægt bóka herbergi með eina til fimm stjörnur. Þegar ég kom inn í herbergið mitt gapti ég því ég hafði fengið stóra borðstofu með borstofuborði, fjórum stólum og skenk. Ég sá í fyrstu ekkert rúm en þegar ég opnaði tvær hurði þá kom í ljós rúm inni í nokkurs konar skáp. En við hliðina á þessu skrýtna rúmherbergi var þokkalegt baðherbergi. Hjá Tom og Debby var td. klósettið á gólfinu við dyrnar inn í herbergið þannið að það var það fyrst sem þú sást. Síðan var hægt a að opna hurðirnar á fataskápnum á veggnum á móti og draga þær út þannig að þær skermuðu af kósettið. Afar sérkennilegt. Hjá Richard voru tveir skápar í herberginu og inni í öðrum klósett og hinum sturta. Herbergið hans Eyþórs sló öll met því þetta var lítil kompa þar sem ekkert komst fyrir nema rúmið sem var þar inni. Ekkert klósett og ekkert baðherbergi. Mitt herbergi reyndist því vera það besta og ég hafði það gott við borðstofuborðið.

Við Godfried skokkuðum 15 km á sunnudagsmorgninum og var gott að ná rykinu úr höfðinu sem hafði komið eftir veisluhöldin kvöldið áður. Við fengum hins vegar ekki nokkurn með okkur í þetta. Hlaupaleiðin var virkilega falleg. Síðan fórum við að skoða kastala og um kvöldið buðu þau hjón mér út að borða áður en þau keyrðu mig út á flugvöll. Frábær ferð.
